MIDDLETOWN, Conn.—The Hobart College squash team earned two wins on the opening day of the 2011 Wesleyan Round Robin. The Statesmen cruised to a 7-2 win over Colgate, and then topped Johns Hopkins 6-3.
Hobart improved its record to 7-4 overall. The Statesmen will take on host Wesleyan tomorrow, Dec. 4 at 8 a.m. and then finish off the round robin with a match against Bucknell at 12:30 p.m.
Hobart started the day earning wins at Nos. 3-9 against the Raiders. Junior
Daniel Pelaez posted an 11-3, 11-2, 11-8 victory at No. 3. Senior
Kevin Kent topped Jack Eiel 11-7, 11-2, 11-3. At No. 5, Junior
Edgardo Gonzalez dropped his first game 9-11, but rallied to win the next three 11-5, 11-2, 11-3.
At No. 6, sophomore Will Boyle cruised to a 12-10, 11-2, 11-8 victory. Junior
Julian Snider won 11-9, 11-9, 11-5 at No. 7 and senior
Grant Bercari topped Jack Gregory 11-7, 11-5, 11-2 at No. 8. Junior
Eric DeRose rounded out the Hobart lineup rallying for an 8-11, 13-11, 11-5, 11-5 triumph at No. 9.
Some of the Statesmen played their best squash of the year against Johns Hopkins. Hobart picked up wins at Nos. 2-7. Pelaez logged an 11-8, 11-8, 11-3 win over his opponent at No. 2. Kent earned an 11-5, 11-4, 11-5 victory at No. 3. Gonzalez dropped his first two matches 6-11, 6-11, but fought for the comeback winning the next three matches 11-7, 11-9, 11-9.
Boyle fought hard for an 11-3, 9-11, 11-5, 11-5 win at No. 5. At No. 6, Snider battled to win in five matches (8-11, 11-6, 11-9, 5-11, 13-11). Bercari cruised to an 11-8, 11-5, 11-1 triumph at No. 7.
