BOX SCORE
GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith sophomore
Taylor Cappello matched a pair of records, to lead the Heron field hockey team to a 6-0 victory over Oswego State tonight. She scored a record-matching four goals and added an assist for a record-matching nine points in a sterling performance against the Lakers.
In the fifth minute, junior
Annie Kietzman opened the evening's scoring with a point-blank shot that was set up by Cappello's feed. In the 11th minute the star of the game found herself one-on-one with Oswego keeper Julie Janusz. The senior turned back the initial offering, but the rebound came right back to Cappello who swatted it home for a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore
Margaret McConnell scored on a long shot from the left flank in the 29th minute, with Cappello netting her second in the 33rd minute. She completed her hat trick 25 seconds before halftime and tied the goal and points marks with the only goal of the second half.
Cappello is the seventh Heron to record four goals in a match and the first since
Kaitlyn Hamilton '10 on Sept. 8, 2009, also against Oswego. Cappello is just the second William Smith student-athlete to enjoy a nine-point match. Hamilton first accomplished the feat on Oct. 27, 2006, against Nazareth.
William Smith (1-0) dominated the final stat sheet, holding a 19-6 advantage in shots and a 9-3 edge in penalty corners. The Lakers (0-1) were able to generate some rushes, but the Heron defense always seemed to be in the right spot to thwart the visitors in the final third of the field.
Junior
Taryn Little played just over 55 minutes and made one save to earn the win in goal, while first-year
Catherine Hare stopped two shots in relief. Janusz went the distance for Oswego, making five saves. Both teams recorded a single defensive save, sophomore
Morgan Atanasio for William Smith and Ashley Collins for the Lakers.
William Smith is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 3, when the Herons host Nazareth at 2 p.m. Oswego returns home to take on Houghton on the same day at 1 p.m.
