Hobart tripped up by Stanford

NEW HAVEN, Conn.—
The Hobart College squash team started the 2012 portion of its schedule dropping a tight match to Stanford 6-3 this afternoon in the first day of the 2012 Yale Round Robin. The Statesmen slipped to 8-6 this season, and the Cardinal improves to 4-2.

Junior Edguardo Gonzalez edged Stanford's Paul Lee 3-11, 11-6, 5-11, 13-11, 11-2 at No. 5. It was his ninth win of the season. Sophomore William Boyle came away with an 11-9, 14-12, 11-9 victory at No. 5. He improved to 9-5 overall this year. Senior Grant Bercari registered Hobart's third win at No. 9 (11-5, 13-11, 11-6). He is now 8-4 overall this winter.

It came down to deciding matches at No. 3 and No. 7. At No. 3, first-year McGee O'Neill dropped his first two matches 12-10, 11-6. He rallied to win the next two 11-6, 11-9, but then was edged 11-9. Junior Julian Snider was tripped up by his Stanford opponent in five matches at No. 7 (11-9, 8-11, 11-5, 4-11, 11-4).

The Statesmen will be back in action tomorrow, Jan. 14 with a match against Colby at 12:30 p.m. and then another at 5:30 p.m. against Connecticut College.
