Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team hung on to defeat visiting Ithaca College 2-1 in a non-league match played this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Statesmen put an end to the Bombers' eight match unbeaten streak.
With their first loss since their season-opener back on Sept. 1, Ithaca is now 4-2-4 overall. Hobart improves to 7-2-0. First-year
Marco Ronning led the Statesmen with two assists. Sophomore goalie
Mike Lucas finished with a season-high eight saves.
Hobart struck first 18:06 into the match. The Statesmen earned a corner and Ronning sent a perfect ball into the box to find senior
Alex Kittelberger on the left post. Kittelberger sent the ball into the left side of the goal from right out in front. He leads the Statesmen with 13 points and six goals this season.
The Bombers had two huge scoring opportunities in the opening half. With 20:22 left in the first, Kyle Baker sent a pass to Blair Carney who broke through the Hobart defense for a one-on-one with Statesman keeper. Carney dribbled into the box and drilled a shot on goal that Lucas rejected with a diving save. With 12:13 remaining before the break, Carney broke through a second time. This time Lucas came out to dive onto the ball, making the initial stop, but he was unable to hang on to it. Carney collected the rebound and fired again, but Lucas smothered his second attempt with another diving save.
In the 71st minute, it appeared that Carney finally broken through and tied up the game for Ithaca. He had sent the ball into the back of the net after a pass from Baker, but the goal was disallowed as the Bombers were called offsides.
In the 85th minute, senior
Caetano Sanchez scored Hobart's second goal, and what proved to be the game-winner. Ronning again set up the play, this time with a crossing pass from the left side to find Sanchez alone on the right side of the goal. Sanchez capitalized for his third tally this season.
Just 1:21 later, Ithaca's Ryan Norland pushed a short pass to Zach Hutchinson who was able to send a shot through a crowd in front of the goal, preventing the shutout.
The Bombers held a 15-10 edge in shots, and the Statesmen held a slight 4-3 lead in corners. Jordan Gentile played all 90 minutes in goal for Ithaca and stopped two shots.
Hobart will be back in action when it travels to take on No. 10 St. Lawrence in a Liberty League match on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 2 p.m.
