Statesmen split 2 matches in final day of Navy Round Robin

The Hobart College squash team split their final two matches in the 2012 Navy Round Robin in Annapolis, Md., today. The Statesmen are now 2-3 overall this season.

Hobart, who is ranked No. 25 in the preseason College Squash Association Rankings, began the day, edging No. 19 Georgetown 5-4. The Statesmen wrapped up the round robin with a 9-0 loss to No. 16 George Washington.

Against the Hoyas, sophomore McGee O'Neil led the Statesmen with an 11-6, 11-5, 9-11, 11-7 win at the top spot. Junior William Boyle followed with a 12-10, 12-14, 11-9, 11-8 triumph at No. 2. The bottom half of Hobart's lineup was solid picking up wins at No. 7-9. First-year Peter Sammis notched an 11-8, 11-7, 11-5 victory at No. 7, and classmate Michael Woods dropped his first game 11-8, but rallied to win the next three, 12-10, 11-9, 11-6 at No. 8. Senior Charlie Merrill came out on top at No. 9, 11-2, 11-3, 11-6.

Against George Washington, first-year Danny Cabrera put up a strong fight at No. 5. He dropped the first two games 11-6, 11-9, but rallied to come out on top 13-11 in the next two. He was edged 11-3 in the final game.

Hobart will be back in action Nov. 17-18 when they compete in the 2012 Liberty League Championship hosted by Vassar College.
