Statesmen squash posts 2-2 record at Liberty League Championship

The Hobart College squash team finished in third place at the 2012 Liberty League Championship hosted by Vassar College this weekend. The Statesmen lost their first two matches on Saturday 9-0 to No. 5 Rochester and No. 11 St. Lawrence, but rallied to win both of today's matches, topping Vassar 8-1 and defeating Bard 9-0.

The Statesmen, who are ranked No. 25 in the College Squash Association preseason rankings, are now 4-5 overall.

Against the Brewers, junior William Boyle led Hobart with an 11-1, 11-3, 11-4 win at No. 2. Senior Edgardo Gonzalez defeated his Vassar opponent 11-7, 11-4, 11-1 at No. 3, and classmate Julian Snider earned an 11-1, 11-3, 13-11 victory at No. 4. First-year Danny Cabrera notched an 11-2, 11-2, 11-2 triumph at No. 5. At No. 6, first-year Peter Sammis cruised to an 11-0, 11-2, 11-2 win, and senior Eric DeRose won 11-2, 11-6, 13-11 at No. 7. First-year Michael Woods breezed to an 11-0, 11-1, 11-1 victory at No. 8, and senior Charlie Merrill toped his competition 11-2, 11-0, 11-1 at No. 9.

Against the Raptors, sophomore McGee O'Neil posted an 11-4, 11-4, 11-3 win at the No. 1 spot. Boyle notched an 11-2, 11-0, 11-6 victory at No. 2, and Gonzalez earned an 11-2, 11-8, 11-4 victory at No. 3. Snider registered an 11-8, 11-0, 11-2 win at No. 4 and Cabrera logged an 11-1, 11-5, 11-4 win at the No. 5 spot. Sammis, DeRose, Woods and Merrill earned wins at Nos. 6-9 respectively, by forfeit.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Dec. 2 when they host Hamilton at 3 p.m.
