Box Score The University of Rochester women's basketball team, ranked 24th in the D3hoops.com preseason poll, defeated William Smith College 79-46 in a non-conference matchup in the Louis Alexander Palestra tonight.
The Yellowjackets (2-1) got off to a hot start and never looked back. UR jumped out to a 14-0 lead only five minutes into the game. That lead would be extended to 18 at halftime behind point guard Ally Zywicki and forward Loren Wagner. Each provided eight points in the first half.
The second half started with a big push from the visiting Herons (1-1), but they couldn't capitalize on some Yellowjacket miscues. Sloppy play forced Head Coach Jim Scheible to pull his starting unit from the floor only three minutes into the half.
With the second unit in, the Herons'
Sydni Salvatore hit a 3-pointer to trim the deficit to 14, but that is as close as the Herons would get for the remainder of the game.
Strong play inside from Amy Woods helped extend the lead back to around 20 with 12 minutes left in the game. With the first unit in the game after that, Wagner and Zywicki helped balloon the lead up to 27.
Wagner finished the game with a team-high 14 points and five rebounds. Zywicki enjoyed a strong all-around day with 11 points, five assists, five rebounds, and four steals. Woods finished with 11 points and six boards while Danielle McNabb had 10 points and 6 rebounds.
For the Herons,
Jaimie Rubin and Salvatore led the way with 13 points each.
William Smith will return to Bristol Gym to host a doubleheader in the first round of the Wendy's College Classic on Tuesday, Nov. 27. Tournament pairings will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 25.
