LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J.—The Hobart College squash team cruised to an 8-1 victory over No. 31 Colgate in its first match of the CSA Team Championships D Division. The Statesmen, ranked No. 26 by the College Squash Association, picked up wins at Nos. 1-8.
First-year
McGee O'Neil logged the first win of the afternoon for Hobart (11-18). He defeated his Raider opponent, 11-4, 11-5, 11-2. Sophomore
William Boyle followed with a strong 12-10, 11-5, 11-2 victory at No. 6. Junior
Daniel Pelaez breezed to an 11-4, 11-5, 11-4 triumph at No. 2, and senior
Kevin Kent recorded an 11-4, 11-0, 12-10 win at No. 5. Junior
Edgardo Gonzalez clinched the Statesmen victory with his 11-4, 11-4, 11-9 win at No. 4 making the overall score 5-1.
Senior
Grant Bercari notched an 11-6, 13-11, 11-7 victory at No. 7. Classmate,
Willis Stephens posted a 3-2 win at No. 8, defeating his Colgate competitor by a score of 11-7, 9-11, 2-11, 11-2, 11-5. Senior
Corey Kabot also battled for a victory at the top spot. He was down four match points, but fought back to win in the fifth game. He edged the Raiders' Steve Carey 8-11, 11-5, 11-13, 11-5, 13-11.
The Statesmen will continue their quest for the Conroy Cup with a second round match against Northeastern tomorrow, Feb. 18 beginning at 3 p.m.
