Love nets 4, but Saints upend Statesmen 13-11

Box Score SYRACUSE, N.Y.—Sophomore Alex Love shared a game-high with four goals in the season opener for the Hobart lacrosse team, but Siena hung on for a 13-11 victory tonight in the Carrier Dome.

The Saints (1-0) used a six-goal run in the third quarter to take a 13-7 lead and hung on from there for the victory. Siena goalie Tom Morr turned aside 20 shots, including several amazing point blank stops. Bryan Neufield led Siena with four goals. Danny Martinsen produced three, and Chris Roth scored twice.

Derek Akner, Sam Miller and Taylor Vanderbeek chipped in two goals apiece for the Statesmen. Bobby Datillo dominated the faceoff X winning 21 out of 28 faceoffs. Jon Lawless played all 60 minutes in goal for Hobart and finished with eight saves.

The teams traded goals throughout the first quarter. Siena struck first just 1:18 in when Chris Roth found the back of the net on a rip from the left wing. At 9:53, Love scored his first goal of the game on a diving shot from right in front of the goal. With 2:16 left in the first, after a pass from Roth, Martinsen put the Saints up 2-1. Vanderbeek tied the game with nine seconds remaining in the opening quarter, but just six seconds later, Chris Brancato sent a pass from midfield to Colin Clive who scored from 7 yards out.

Miller tied things up at three just 40 seconds into the second quarter with a man-up goal. Vanderbeek gave Hobart its first lead of the game with 13:32 on the clock. However, the Statesmen lead wouldn't last as the Saints produced four straight goals, including back-to-back goals by Neufeld to close out the first half with a 7-4 advantage.

Hobart came out strong to start the second half. Love tallied back-to-back goals in the opening 2:28 to get the Statesmen within one. Twenty-four seconds after Love's second goal, Miller ripped a shot into the upper right corner of the goal for an extra man tally to tie the game at seven.

The Saints responded with six unanswered goals for a 13-7 lead. Neufeld scored twice in the run, and Martinsen registered a goal and an assist.

With 48 seconds left in the third quarter, Matt Campbell found the back of the net to halt the run and make it a 13-8 game. Akner opened the fourth quarter scoring with a laser from 12 yards out to close the gap to four with 9:04 to go. Three minutes later, Love capped his scoring. Akner got the final Hobart goal at 2:21, forcing a turnover near midfield and then scoring on the unsettled situation.

Hobart had chances in the waning seconds with Siena serving a 1 minute non-releasable penalty, but Marr made a huge point blank save and the Statesmen hit a post before running out of time.

The Statesmen held a 55-33 advantage in shots and a 42-29 lead in ground balls. Hobart was successful on 16 of 18 clear attempts, while the Saints were 24-of-28.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 25 when they host Cornell for their home opener on Boswell Field at 1 p.m.
