Hobart hosts Union in Liberty League Semifinal

The Hobart College basketball team finished the regular season with a 21-4 record, winning the Liberty League regular season crown with a 14-2 mark. The Statesmen earned the top seed in the league tournament which begins at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, when fourth seeded Union College comes to Bristol Gym.
 
Fans are encouraged to park in the Medbury parking lot and ride the free game day shuttle to Bristol Gym. The game day shuttle will begin running at 6:30 p.m. and continue for 30 minutes after the game. Admission is free for all fans.
 
The Statesmen boast four starters averaging between 11.2 ppg and 13.4 ppg. Senior forward Matt Pebole leads the team with 13.4 ppg and 7.4 rpg. Junior guard Stefan Thompson is producing 13.2 ppg and a team-high 4.1 apg. Sophomore forward Richie Bonney is scoring 13.2 ppg and grabbing 6.7 rpg. He leads the team in field goal percentage (.590). Sophomore guard Joe Gibbons adds 11.2 ppg and 4.2 rpg.
 
Hobart swept the season series against Union, topping the Dutchmen 83-61 in Geneva on Jan. 10 behind senior guard Greg Stern's school record 11 3-pointers. The Statesmen also prevailed in Schenectady, but in a much more dramatic fashion, getting a last second trey from Stern to eke out a 62-60 win.
 
Keven Donohue leads three Union players in double digits, logging 15.3 ppg and a team-high 7.8 rpg. The Dutchmen were 16-8 overall, 9-7 in conference play. Union tied Clarkson for fourth place in the league standings. The Dutchmen earned the final spot in the tournament by virtue of the second tie breaker, record against the rest of the league in descending order. Both teams were swept by Hobart, but Union split with second place Skidmore, while the Golden Knights lost both of their contests against the Thoroughbreds.

Second seeded Skidmore (17-8, 11-5) host third seeded St. Lawrence (14-10, 10-6) in the other semifinal on Wednesday. The winners will meet in the championship game on Saturday, Feb. 25 at the highest remaining seed.
