Herons win 9th in a row, defeat Ithaca 8-1

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith tennis team secured a perfect 9-0 record for the month of April with an 8-1 win over Ithaca in a match played today on the indoor courts in Bristol Field House at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation. The Herons improved to 14-3 overall.

With its 14 wins this season, William Smith has tied for second on the program list for wins in a season list. Ithaca is now 11-7.

The Herons swept doubles play to start their final match of the regular season. Senior Joanie Hilton and junior Kiara Ocasio blanked their Bomber competitors 8-0 at No. 1 The pair improved to 17-5 overall. Seniors Jess McCue and Katie Serock cruised to an 8-1 victory and junior Hallsey Leighton and Remy Raevsky earned an 8-3 triumph at No. 3. McCue and Serock are now 14-5 and Leighton and Raevsky improved to 9-4.

William Smith came out on top of Nos. 2-6 in singles. Hilton earned her second victory of the day 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. She improved her season record to 19-5. Leighton downed Laurel Salladay 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3. She is now 10-4 in singles. Sophomore Casey Nicoletti notched her 16th victory of the year with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4, and first-year Haley Wolf logged a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5. Wolf is now 17-3 this season and extended her win streak to eight straight matches.  Raevsky topped Becky Campbell 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.

The Herons will be back in action May 4-6 when they compete in the Liberty League Tournament.
