Valiants outlast Saints in overtime

Box Score

GENEVA, N.Y.—Amanda DeChent scored 7:12 into overtime to lift Manhattanville College to a 3-2 victory over St. Lawrence University in Game 3 of the William Smith Classic at McCooey Field. The Valiants forced OT with the game-tying goal with just 46 seconds remaining in regulation.

DeChant netted her team-leading 10th goal of the season with a reverse sweep that lifted the ball into the upper left corner of the cage. Her heroics were set up by Julia Esposito's penalty corner goal. She unleashed a blast from the top of the circle that deflected off a Saint's stick to tie the game in the final minute of the second quarter.

St. Lawrence (0-5) controlled the first half, outshooting Manhattanville (4-3) 9-5 and taking three more penalty corners, 8-5. Kate Higgins opened the scoring in the 14th minute, finishing a feed from Courtney Cartier.

The Valiants pulled even less than two minutes later when DeChent dribbled into the circle and drove the ball past the SLU keeper.

The Saints carried a 2-1 lead into halftime thanks to Cartier's third goal of the year, a strike from just 5 yards out.

After the intermission, Manhattanville seized control of the game, owning a 17-3 advantage in shots and a 12-5 edge in penalty corners.

In goal, Amy Hilton earned the win with nine saves. St. Lawrence's Brady Cooper kept her team in the contest, making 14 saves, including eight in the second half and three in overtime.

Manhattanville will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Sept. 19, when the Valiants travel to Eastern Connecticut. St. Lawrence returns home to host Union at 4 p.m. on Sept. 21.
