Bonney scores 28, but Clarkson ekes out 53-52 win

Box Score Hobart College junior forward Richie Bonney scored a game-high 28 points, but Clarkson University survived a last-second shot by the Statesmen to hold on for a 53-52 Liberty League win over Hobart College in Alumni Gymnasium in Potsdam, N.Y.

The Statesmen (8-6, 4-1 Liberty) started the game with back-to-back 3-pointers from Bonney and sophomore guard Connor Rehbaum and had 11 points in less than three minutes. Clarkson (12-4, 4-3) responded by going on a 13-0 run including a 3-pointer from Jerry Coleman and two more from Dylan Hodownes. Neither team led by more than six following a jumper from Richie Bonney at the 9:18 mark. Clarkson ended the half with a 13-4 run that gave the Knights a 32-29 edge at the break.

Bonney was nearly impossible to stop in the post, scoring 15 first-half points on 7-for-9 shooting. Hodownes had the hot hand for the Knights making three 3-point field goals for 11 points.

Early in the second half, Clarkson stretched its advantage to as many as eight points on three occasions, but Hobart continued to pound the ball inside to Bonney, who missed only one shot in seven second-half attempts. A jumper from sophomore guard Trey Blanding gave the Statesmen their only lead of the second half with just 2:52 remaining. It proved to be Hobart's final points.

Clarkson didn't score much down the stretch either. The Knights managed just six trips to the free throw line and missed their first four before Coleman toed the stripe with 1:12 left. He made both freebies to push CU ahead 53-52. After a Hobart turnover, Clarkson ran off a good chunk of time.

Forced to foul, the Statesmen sent Marques Charlton to the line for a one-and-one, but his first shot missed the front end and the ball went out of bounds. On Hobart's final possession, the ball was worked around the perimeter but Clarkson was able to deny the post. Hobart had to settle for a 20-foot jumper by senior guard Stefan Thompson as the clock ran out.

Bonney was 13-of-16 from the floor and collected eight rebounds. Thompson added seven points and a game-high seven assists. The Statesmen outrebounded the Knights 36-29 behind senior forward Sean Peer's game-high 10 caroms.

For Clarkson, Hodownes came off the bench for a team-high 13 points as Clarkson's starters combined for the other 40 points. Jerry Coleman and Felix Abongo each had nine points.

Hobart will wrap up its three-game road trip on Tuesday, Jan. 22, when the Statesmen visit Union. The league contest is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
