Statesmen post 1-3 record at 2013 Yale Round Robin

The Hobart College squash team, who is ranked No. 29 in the most recent College Squash Association Rankings, went 1-3 in the 2013 Yale Round Robin played this weekend in New Haven, Conn. The Statesmen are now 5- 9 overall.

In their first match of the weekend, the Statesmen fell to No. 25 Stanford 6-3. Sophomore McGee O'Neil put up a strong fight and came out with a 3-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5 win at No. 2. Senior Eric DeRose won a close five-game match at No. 8 (4-11, 11-7, 11-9, 5-11, 11-5).  At No. 9, senior Charlie Merrill dropped his first game 11-7, but rallied to win the next three 11-8, 11-7, 11-4.

On the second day of the round robin, the Statesmen split two matches. In their first match of the day, Hobart fell 7-2 to No. 19 Colby. O'Neil dropped his game 11-5, but rallied to win the next three 11-9, 12-10, 11-6 at No. 2. First-year Michael Woods played smart solid squash, earning a 13-11, 11-9, 11-8 victory at No. 7.

The Statesmen picked up a 6-3 win over No. 30 Tufts in Saturday's second match. O'Neil continued his winning ways, picking up his third straight win of the weekend at No. 2 (7-11, 11-3, 11-5, 11-6). Senior Edgardo Gonzalez cruised to an 11-5, 11-8, 11-3 triumph at No. 3. Hobart notched wins at Nos. 6-9. First-year Peter Sammis topped his opposition 11-9, 11-5, 6-11, 10-12, 11-7 at No. 6. Woods earned a four-game win at No. 7 (11-7, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6). At No. 8, DeRose came out with an 11-8, 7-11, 11-4, 11-3 triumph, and at No. 9 Merrill cruised to an 11-4, 11-4, 11-4 victory.

In their final match of the round robin on Sunday, the Statesmen lost 9-0 to No. 26 Connecticut College.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 25, when they host Drexel at the Smith Squash Center at 7 p.m.
