Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College junior forward
Richie Bonney scored a game-high 22 points and matched his career-high with 16 rebounds to lead the Statesmen to a 76-59 Liberty League win over Vassar College in Bristol Gym this afternoon. Bonney was 10-of-16 from the floor on the way to his eight career double-double.
Hobart (11-6, 7-1) grabbed 55 rebounds, the most for the Statesmen since pulling down 57 at D'Youville on Nov. 26, 2011. Hobart also posted eight blocked shots for the second time this season—the Statesmen turned back eight on Dec. 30 against Hartwick. Bonney led the block party as well, rejecting a game-high four shots. First-year forward
Cole Smothers added three blocks. Junior guard
Joe Gibbons produced 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a blocked shot. Senior guard
Rezin Davis chipped in nine points while
Connor Rehbaum and
Trey Blanding both finished with eight points.
Vassar (5-12, 1-7) put three players in double digits, paced by Erikson Wasyl's 16 points. Curtis Smith and Sam Rappaport scored 13 points and 11 points, respectively. The Brewers shot just 33.3 percent from the floor, but stayed somewhat close by converting 10-of-25 from behind the 3-point arc.
Hobart raced out to a 16-0 lead with Bonney and Gibbons both contributing six points. The Statesmen never took their foot off the gas in the opening 20 minutes, cruising into the locker room with a 41-16 lead. Bonney led all scorers at the break with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Vassar was just 4-of-28 from the floor in the first half.
All 12 Statesmen saw action in the second half. The Brewers were able to trim 13 points off a 27-point deficit, but seven straight Hobart points squashed any hopes of a comeback. The Statesmen pushed their lead back out to 27 on a layup by first-year guard
Michael LaValle with 4:31 remaining and cruised to the 17-point win.
Hobart will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 1, when the Statesmen host Rensselaer. Tipoff in Bristol Gym is slated for 8 p.m. Vassar will return home to host Bard at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29.
