Hobart and Vassar play through double overtime to 0-0 tie

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team and Vassar battled through two overtime periods to a 0-0 tie in a Liberty League match played this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Statesmen are now 5-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in conference play. The Brewers are 5-3-3 and 0-0-2 in the Liberty League.

Hobart almost got on the scoreboard in the 24th minute. Junior Bernard Abagali blasted a shot on goal, but Vassar's goalie, Ryan Grimme dove to his left, laying out to make the save.

The Brewers had one of their best scoring chances of the match in the 74th minute. Juliano Pereira fired a shot on goal that was stopped by Hobart's junior goalie Mike Lucas. The rebound bounced out to Rob Manukyan, but his attempt was almost immediately stifled by Lucas.

With just 4:30 left in regulation, sophomore Tyler Niles sent in a diving header, after a pass from sophomore Marco Ronning, but his shot banged off the right post. Vassar held a slight 17-16 edge in total shots at the end of regulation.

In overtime, the Statesmen out-shot the Brewers 7-1 and notched three corners, but they were unable to capitalize. Soon after a Hobart corner with about five minutes left in the second overtime, Niles had another close call. He had another header after a pass from Ronning, but this time it sailed just wide of the goal. With 4:10 left in the second overtime period, first-year Clint Dunn put a hard shot on goal, but once again Grimme came up with the diving save.

Vassar had their best chance of the game in the 109th minute. Evan Seltzer sent a bouncing shot on goal. Lucas made the save, but the rebound deflected out in front, however Lucas quickly came out of the goal and dove on top of the ball to preserve the 0-0 tie.

Lucas finished with six saves in all 110 minutes. Grimme finished with eight saves in goal for Vassar. The Statesmen finished with a 23-18 advantage in shots and an 11-4 lead in corners.

Hobart will be back in action tomorrow, Oct. 5, when it hosts Bard for another Liberty League match at 2 p.m.
