Statesmen edged in opening round of CSA Team Championships

The Hobart College squash team lost a tight match to No. 26 Stanford in their first round of the CSA Team Championships played tonight in New Haven, Conn. The Statesmen, who are ranked No. 31, fell 6-3.

Hobart is now 8-14 overall this season. The Statesmen will take on No. 30 Johns Hopkins tomorrow at 3 p.m. The Blue Jays dropped their opening round match this afternoon to No. 27 Bucknell.

Hobart took a 2-1 lead over Stanford after the opening round of matches, with wins from senior Charlie Merrill and first-year Peter Sammis. Merrill battled for a 12-14, 11-7, 11-1, 8-11, 11-8 win at No. 9. Sammis also won in five games at No. 6 (10-12, 11-9, 11-7, 6-11, 11-6). Stanford then took a 4-2 lead after the second round of matches. First-year Michael Woods won in the third round, 11-9, 11-8, 11-3 at No. 7, to make it 4-3 overall. However the Cardinal picked up wins at Nos. 1 and 4 to secure the victory.
