Box Score SYRACUSE, N.Y.—The fifth-ranked Cornell University lacrosse used a pair of six-goal runs to defeat Hobart College 19-11 in the Carrier Dome this evening. Junior attackman
Alex Love paced the Statesmen with five points, including his 11th career hat trick.
Cornell got four goals and five assists from 2011 National Player of the Year Rob Pannell. The senior attackman showed no signs of the injury that cost him all but two games last season. Senior attackman Steven Mock added five goals and sophomore midfielder Connor Buczek recorded four goals and an assist. Senior goalie AJ Fiore made seven saves to earn the win.

Hobart (1-1) traded punches with Cornell (1-0) in the first 26 minutes of the contest. After sophomore John Hogan put the Big Red on the board first, Love and Stone teamed up to even the score. Love fed Stone who unleashed a laser from the left side of the cage, almost on the goal line extended. Cornell carried a 3-1 lead into the second quarter thanks to back-to-back goals by Pannell.
Hobart opened the second quarter scoring when Love ripped a low-to-high shot with time running out on a stall warning. The Big Red got the goal back when sophomore attackman Matt Donovan got a step on his man and deposited a shot from right in front. Sophomore midfielder
Zach Reed made it a 4-3 game when he drove from behind the goal to get off a low shot as he was knocked to the turf.
Cornell seized control with three goals in less than two minutes as time wound down in the first half. Pannell set up the first two, Mock at 4:00 and Buczek extra-man at 3:28. Buczek fed Mock for the third at 2:08 to send the Big Red into the break with a 7-3 lead.
Buczek, Pannell and Mock scored in succession to start the second half, stretching the Cornell lead to 10-3. McHenry ended the run, finishing a pass from Stone, but two minutes later, Pannell let fly a quick, low shot that restored the seven-goal lead.
Hobart responded with four unanswered goals that closed the gap to 11-8 with 1:50 left in the third quarter. Senior midfielder
Derek Akner scored off an assist from Reed to start the run. Less than a minute later, Love ran out from behind the goal and put home a low shot to make it 11-6. Then in transition, Love then found McHenry, who put home a shot from right in front. Akner closed out the run with his second goal of the year.
Buczek scored with 67 seconds left in the third quarter to give Cornell a 12-8 lead heading into the final frame. The Big Red scored five straight to open the fourth quarter to seal the win. Hobart scored three of the final five goals of the night to complete the scoring.
Cornell outshot Hobart 46-35, had a 40-31 advantage in ground balls, and a 19-15 edge on faceoffs.
The Statesmen will return to action on Saturday, March 2, when they visit Binghamton. Faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
