Skidmore slips past Hobart in 2OT

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College basketball team outscored Hobart College 9-3 in the second overtime for a 72-66 Liberty League win at the Williamson Center.

The Thoroughbreds improve to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in league play, while the Statesmen are 7-4 and 1-1.

Tanner Brooks led all scorers with 20 points to go along with four assists and three steals for the Thoroughbreds. Perun Kovacevic added 15 points and four blocks. Connor Merrill had his third double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Erik Sanders contributed 14 points, three assists and four steals.

For Hobart, junior Connor Rehbaum led four players in double figures with 18 points. Senior Richie Bonney played all 50 minutes and had a double-double on 11 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Andrew Hoy scored 12 points and senior Joe Gibbons had 11 points and four assists.

Both teams relied heavily on their starters. Bench scoring accounted for just eight of the game's 138 total points.

Hobart forced overtime when first-year Pete Drescher scored with eight seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 61. Brooks had a good look at the buzzer for Skidmore, but his shot rattled off the rim.

Neither team could manage a field goal in the first overtime as the starters gutted it out for both teams. Skidmore took a 63-61 lead on a pair of Kovacevic free throws at the 4:07 mark. Gibbons responded with a pair of his own with 3:51 left. That would be it for the first overtime scoring.

In the second overtime, Hoy gave the Statesmen a 66-65 lead with a 3-pointer with 3:45 to play. That was Hobart's lone field goal in the two overtimes and final points of the game. Skidmore scored the final seven points. Brooks scored six of the Thoroughbred's nine points in the final OT, going a perfect 4-for-4 from the line in the final stanza and 8-for-8 for the game.

Skidmore shot 41.5 percent for the game, despite going 3-of-25 (12%) from 3-point range. Hobart shot 37.1 percent.

The Statesmen controlled the first half, holding the lead for more than 13 of the opening 20 minutes. Hobart built the largest lead of the day, taking a 22-13 lead on a layup by Gibbons.

In the second half, the Thoroughbreds carried the play, building an eight-point advantage with six straight points midway through the frame. The Statesmen outscored their hosts 7-2 in the final two minutes of regulation to force overtime.

Hobart will return to Bristol Gym for its next contest on Tuesday, Jan. 14. The Statesmen will host RIT for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
