Statesmen earn a spot in Conroy Cup championship with 8-1 win over Stanford

The Hobart College squash team defeated Stanford 8-1 this morning to earn a spot in the Conroy Cup championship game. The Statesmen, who are ranked No. 26 in the most recent College Squash Association Rankings, are now 7-12 overall.

It's the second time this season Hobart has defeated Stanford, who is currently ranked No. 27. The Statesmen defeated the Cardinal 7-2 back on Jan. 15, 2014 in California. Hobart advances to the Conroy Cup championship match for the first time since 2012. The Statesmen will face No. 25 Connecticut College who defeated No. 28 Bucknell 7-2 in its semifinal match today. The championship will take place tomorrow, Feb. 16, at 9 a.m.

First-year Scott Marcus logged Hobart's first victory in four games at No. 9 (10-12, 11-9, 11-6, 11-4). Junior McGee O'Neil made it 2-0 with an 11-8, 13-15, 11-8, 13-11 at No. 6. First-year Felipe Pantle gave the Statesmen a 3-0 advantage with a five-game victory at No. 3 (11-9, 11-4, 6-11, 10-12, 11-7). First-year Art Martella registered an 11-9, 11-3, 7-11, 11-9 victory at No. 8 and sophomore Danny Cabrera clinched the overall win with an 11-7, 14-12, 11-3 win at the No. 5 spot.

First-year Beau Orchard dropped his first game 8-11, but rallied to win the next three 11-5, 11-9, 11-3. Sophomore Michael Woods made it 7-0 with a 11-6, 11-4, 15-13 triumph at No. 7, and junior Billy Abrams logged the Statesmen's eighth victory with an 11-5, 11-7, 11-5 win at the top spot.
