Colgate rallies for 7-5 win over Hobart

Box Score HAMILTON, N.Y.—The Colgate University lacrosse team scored four goals in the fourth quarter to rally past Hobart College 7-5 at Kerr Stadium this afternoon. The Raiders took the lead for the first time in the game with just 1:40 remaining and added an empty-net goal with 18 seconds left.

Senior goalie Peter Zonino made 10 saves and first-year defenseman Shane Hurley recorded a game-high four caused turnovers. Junior midfielder Zach Reed scored a pair of goals and senior attackman Cam Stone added a goal and an assist.

Kevin Adams paced Colgate (4-1) with a hat trick. Matt Clarkson scored twice and added an assist. Alex Kinnealey went 9-of-13 at the faceoff X and picked up a game-high six ground balls.

The Statesmen got a strong effort from its defense, but injuries and illness have left the offense shorthanded, resulting in second half swoon. The Raiders' Ryan Walsh came into the game with the nation's longest goal scoring streak, but Hobart limited him to just a single assist, halting the streak at 35 games.

The Statesmen (0-4) got off to a fast start thanks to a heavy-pressure ride and early success at the X. Colgate failed on half of its first eight clear attempts. The Raiders also came into the game as the national leader in faceoff percentage (.708), but Hobart first-year Jake Shapiro won 5-of-7 before halftime.

Sophomore attackman Matt Opsahl, starting in place of the injured Alex Love, netted the only goal of the first quarter with an unassisted tally at the 5:42 mark. One minute into the second quarter, Reed scored to double the Statesmen lead. Stone followed with a hand in back-to-back scores to make it a 4-0 game. He scored unassisted at 11:03 and then set up junior Brendan Saylor at 6:56.

Clarkson scored 3:40 before the break to make it a 4-1 game going into halftime.

While faceoffs and the ride were a Hobart strength in the first half, the Raiders turned things around in the second half. Colgate was 8-of-9 clearing and won all nine faceoffs in the final 30 minutes.

Adams scored to start the second half, but Reed followed with a low-to-high shot to restore Hobart's three-goal edge with 6:49 left in the third quarter. Colgate's Eric Foote found the back of the net at 2:08, trimming the Statesmen lead to 5-3 heading into the fourth quarter.

Adams opened the fourth quarter scoring with an extra-man goal at 9:55. The Raiders finished just 1-of-4 on the extra-man while the Statesmen were 0-for-1. Three minutes later, Adams scored again to tie the game at 5-all. Colgate won the ensuing faceoff, but junior Thomas Petrocci picked off a Raider pass and streaked to the other end of the field to get the ball back for the Statesmen offense.

Hobart was given a stall warning with just under five minutes to go. As the timer wound down, Reed put a low shot on frame that Colgate keeper Brandon Burke saved, but Reed collected the rebound while tiptoeing along the crease to keep possession for the Statesmen. Burke finished with six saves.

Unfortunately, Hobart turned the ball over a short time later thanks to a well-timed check by John Baker, setting the stage for Brendon McCann's go-ahead, wraparound goal. Clarkson sealed the win with Zonino out of the crease trying to help the Statesmen get possession back.

Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, March 8, traveling to Hempstead, N.Y., to take on Brown (1-1) at Hofstra. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
