Herons advance to Liberty League tournament semifinals with 5-0 win over RPI

The William Smith College tennis team cruised to a 5-0 win over Rensselaer in a Liberty League tournament quarterfinal match played this morning at St. Lawrence in Canton, N.Y. The Herons are now 14-4 and advance to the tournament semifinals.
 
William Smith, who is ranked no. 17 in the Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, will face top-seeded Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds defeated Bard 5-0 in their quarterfinal match this morning. All matches in the tournament are played to decision.
 
RPI, who is ranked No. 16 in the Northeast Region, competed its season with a 9-6 record.  The Herons avenged a 5-4 loss to the Engineers back on April 12 in Geneva, N.Y.
 
William Smith took a 3-0 lead in doubles. First-year Hannah More and junior Haley Wolf battled for a 9-7 win at the top doubles spot. Sophomore Sydney Arsenault and senior Casey Nicoletti teamed up for an 8-6 victory at No. 2 and sophomores Kelley Hartmann and Hannah Webster edged their competition 9-8 (8-6).
 
More downed her competition 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Nicoletti logged an 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4 to clinch the overall victory and a spot in the tournament semifinals for the Herons.
 
Tomorrow's semifinal will be played at 10 a.m.
