Storms force early ending, Statesmen and Bombers finish in 2-2 overtime tie

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team had its match end in a 2-2 tie with Ithaca this afternoon on Cozzens Field. After the Bombers scored with 1:47 left in regulation to send the match into overtime, the teams played 7:09 of extra time, but were forced off the field due to lightning. Officials then called the game due to darkness.

With the tie in the non-league contest, the Statesmen are now 5-3-1 overall, while the Bombers are 1-5-2 this season.

With just 1:06 left in the opening half, Sean Forward put Ithaca on the scoreboard. He carried the ball into the box and placed his shot in the upper right corner of the goal to give the Bombers a 1-0 advantage going into the break.

The Statesmen came out strong in the second half, tying the game up a 1-1 just 3:32 into the period. Junior Marco Ronning sent in a corner kick, that senior Kyle Herod was able to redirect into the back of the net. It was his second goal this season. Then in the 59th minute, first-year Zach Poretz gave Hobart a 2-1 lead. First-year Nick Dosky fired a shot that was blocked by a defender. It bounced to Poretz who sent home the rebound for his second goal this season.

Ithaca appeared determined to tie things up as the second half was coming to an end. The Bombers had a free kick by Joseph Dobbins sail just wide right in the 49th minute and then earned a corner in the 82nd minute, but their scoring attempt was cleared away by the Statesmen defense. However, Cobi Byrne would tie things up for Ithaca in the 89th minute. The Bombers earned a free kick just outside of the box. Byrne sent the ball into the box through a crowd it front, and it banged off the inside of the far right post before crossing the goal line.

The teams were able to play just 7:09 of the first overtime period before lightning in the area forced everyone off the field. With the delay and the storm, it was deemed too dark to continue the match.

The Bombers finished with a 21-14 advantage in shots, while Hobart held an 8-5 lead in corners. Senior Mike Lucas played all 97:09 in goal for the Statesmen and made five saves. Jordan Gentile played the whole match in goal for Ithaca and stopped three shots.

Hobart will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 3, when it travels to take on Bard in a Liberty League contest at 4 p.m.
