GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith College tennis team notched an 8-1 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology this afternoon in a match contested at the HWS Tennis Center. The win improves the Herons to 5-7 while the Tigers drop to 4-8.
William Smith took control of the match early, jumping out to a 2-1 lead in doubles play. Senior
Haley Wolf and sophomore
Hannah More won at No. 1 doubles 8-3. In the No. 2 spot, junior
Sydney Arsenault and first-year
Michaelann Denton dropped only one game as they emerged victorious 8-1.
The Herons swept singles play to close out the match. Wolf easily dispatched Gianna Heaviland at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0, while sophomore
Annie Venditti bested her RIT opponent 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Arsenault collected her second win of the match, 6-2, 6-4, to clinch the overall victory for William Smith. More won at No. 1 singles for the Herons, 7-5, 6-4. Denton remains perfect in dual matches this spring, notching her 11th straight win. Denton defeated Diane Wang, 6-2, 6-3. First-year
Alex Cattie closed out the match with a 6-2, 7-6 victory at No. 6 singles.
The Herons return to the court on Saturday, April 18, when they host Cortland and Oneonta for a pair of matches at the HWS Tennis Center. Action is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.Â
