Statesmen to compete for Summers Cup

The Hobart College squash team will travel to New Haven, Conn., this weekend for the 2016 College Squash Association Team Championships. For the second straight season, the Statesmen will compete for the Summers Cup.

There will be 64 teams competing in eight divisions over two weekends at the CSA Championships. The first weekend, Feb. 19-21 will feature teams ranked 17th and below, while Feb. 26-28 will feature the top 16 ranked men's teams. Yale University will serve as the primary host while matches will also be played at Wesleyan University, the Hopkins School, and Choate Rosemary Hall.

Hobart, which is No. 24 in the most recent CSA Team Rankings, brings a 7-12 record into the weekend. The Statesmen will open the tournament with No. 17 Bates on Friday, at 2:30 p.m. at Yale. Hobart and the Bobcats will play for the second time in less than a week as Bates defeated the Statesmen 6-3 on Feb. 14. In the second round, Hobart will face either No. 20 Virginia or No. 21 Colby also at Yale. The other half of the bracket includes No. 18 Williams, No. 19 Wesleyan, No. 22 Amherst, and No. 23 Bowdoin.

Sophomore Jack Shannon is a team-best 11-8 this year, playing in the middle of the lineup. First-year Josh Oakley is right behind him with a 10-8 overall record. Oakley has played all 18 of his matches at the No. 1 position for the Statesmen. Senior Danny Cabrera is 10-9 this season.

Hobart is looking to take home its first team championship since winning the Conroy Cup in 2012. The Statesmen won the Summers Cup in 1990.
