Herons fall in Liberty League semifinals

ITHACA, N.Y.-The William Smith College Tennis team concluded its 2015-16 season today after falling to top seeded St. Lawrence 5-2 in the Liberty League tournament semifinals at the Reis Tennis Center at Cornell University. The Herons finish the season with an 11-8 overall record.
 
The Saints, who are the 15th ranked team in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional Rankings are now 14-6 overall. St. Lawrence will face the winner of the second semifinal, No. 2 Vassar and No. 3 Skidmore, tomorrow at 2 p.m.
 
The Saints jumped out to a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles play. William Smith earned a point in the No. 1 spot when junior Hannah More and sophomore Michaelann Denton defeated Morgan McNeal and Georgia Comber 8-5. Denton and More finished the year with an 18-6 overall record, including a 13-4 record at No. 1.
 
Singles play was tightly contested with three matches reaching the third set. In the No. 2 spot, first-year Alex Greenberg defeated Emily Wyman 6-4, 6-4 to finish her rookie season with an overall record of 15-9. St. Lawrence clinched the match with wins at No. 1, 3, and 6. The two matches still playing when the match was decided were both in the third set.
 
The Herons returned to the postseason after missing out on the tournament in 2014-15. With a 15-3 record in the top spot, More posted the most wins in the top spot by a Herons since Chelsea Rauck '09 went 14-2 in 2006-07. More finished the year as the regions 18th ranked singles player.
