Statesmen open 2017-18 season at Buffalo Round Robin

The Hobart College squash team will begin its 2017-18 season on Saturday, Nov. 4. The Statesmen will travel to Buffalo, N.Y., to compete in the Buffalo Round Robin.

Hobart will play three matches this weekend. The Statesmen will take on Denison at 11 a.m., Washington (Mo.) at 12:30 p.m. and Liberty League foe Bard at 2 p.m.

Head Coach Tim Riskie begins his seventh season at the helm of the Hobart squash program. Under Riskie, the Statesmen are 58-84. Riskie returns eight from last year's squad, including junior Josh Oakley, who is a two-time All-Liberty League selection.

In 2016-17, Hobart was 9-14, finishing the season ranked No. 26 in the College Squash Association team rankings. The Statesmen were edged 5-4 by Wesleyan in the championship match of the Conroy Cup at last year's CSA National Championships. Hobart finished third at the 2017 Liberty League Championships with a 2-2 record.

Cameron Adams, Matthew Frantz, Fred Maynor, Terrance Rose, Jack Shannon and Divine Wing represent the Class of 2018 for the Statesmen. They will provide experience and leadership. Rose was one of three Hobart players to compete in the CSA Individual Championships. He finished his junior campaign with an 11-12 overall record, including a team best 5-1 mark at No. 3. Shannon was 9-13 a season ago, posting a perfect 6-0 record at No. 4. Wing returned to the lineup in January, finishing the year with an 8-9 record in the middle of the lineup. Frantz was 8-15 last year, playing at Nos. 6-9 while Maynor was 2-2 at No. 9 and 4-4 in exhibition matches.

Oakley is the lone returning junior on Hobart's roster. He advanced to the consolation semifinals at last winter's CSA Individual Championships. He posted a team best 11-9 record in his sophomore campaign, playing all 20 matches in the top spot. Oakley ended his season with a five-match win streak and posted a perfect 3-0 record at the CSA Team Championships in February.

Ilyas Khan returns for a second season with the Statesmen. He did not play last year but was 8-14 in 2015-16, playing in the top half of the lineup. He posted a team best 4-4 record at No. 3. He was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week once that season.

First-years Trevor Laing, Parkman Levis, and Jeffrey Wan will look to add depth for Hobart this season.

Follwing this weekend's round robin, the Statesmen will travel to Annapolis, Md., for the Navy Round Robin Nov. 18-19. Hobart will wrap up the 2017 portion of its schedule against Virginia on Dec. 3. The Statesmen will open the 2018 portion of its schedule in Palo Alto, Calif., with matches against Stanford and Tufts.
