The No. 4 seed in the tournament, Hobart (16-10) upset top-seeded and two-time defending champion Skidmore College 70-65 in last night's semifinals. Sophomore
Colin Dougherty scored a game-high 26 points against the Thoroughbreds.
Â
Seeded third, Union (15-10) upset No. 2 St. Lawrence University 110-108 in double overtime. Senior Deshon Burgess led the Dutchmen with 34 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer with 0.9 seconds remaining.
Â
Dougherty leads three Statesmen averaging double digits in the scoring column. He's producing 16.9 ppg, 4.6 rpg, and a team-high 2.7 apg. First-year
Tucker Lescoe is one of only three players in the program's history to make 70 or more 3-pointers in a season. Entering the championship, he has 72 triples, seven off the record. Lescoe averages 12.3 ppg. Sophomore
Jamal Lucas chips in 12.1 ppg and a team-high 4.7 rpg.
Â
The Statesmen are among the top teams in the nation, defensively. Hobart is eighth in the country in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.298), 38th in field goal percentage defense (.406), and 53rd in scoring defense (68.8 ppg).
Â
Union has four players in double digits, led by Burgess' 19.3 ppg. Senior Wade McNamara contributes 15.9 ppg and a team-high 10.2 rpg. Greg King and Kevin Weckworth each add 10.4 ppg.
Â
The Dutchmen take care of the basketball, ranking 34th in the nation in turnovers per game (11.5). Union is also a potent 3-point shooting team, ranking second in the league with 224 makes from beyond the arc.
Â
The Dutchmen swept the regular season series with the Statesmen. In Geneva, Burgess hit a 3-pointer to force overtime and Union escaped Bristol Gym with a 69-61 win in January. Last Sunday, the Dutchmen closed out the regular season with a 70-64 win in Schenectady.
Â
This will be the fourth all-time meeting between Hobart and Union in the Liberty League Tournament. The three previous contests were all in the semifinal round. The Dutchmen prevailed in 2000 (82-81) and 2005 (77-74) while the Statesmen came out on top in 2012 (73-53). Union leads the all-time series with Hobart 60-46, including a 35-20 advantage in Schenectady.
