Heron rowing to compete in Head of the Charles

The William Smith College rowing team will compete in the Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday, Oct. 22. The Herons will race in the Women's Collegiate Eights event starting at 2:41 p.m.

The Head of the Charles is the largest two-day regatta in the world. This is the 54th year that rowers will race down the Charles River, which separates Boston from Cambridge, Mass. The HOCR feature 66 events,  804 clubs, and 2,308 entries that will compete on a3-mile course that runs from Boston University's DeWolfe Boathouse to just short of Northeastern University's Henderson Boathouse.

Last year, William Smith's varsity eight finished 12th of 26, earning a qualifying spot in this year's regatta by finishing in the top half of the field. The Herons earned a bronze medal in 2013 and took home a silver medal in 2012.

This year William Smith will race in bow No. 11. Susan Hurwitz, Emma Falkenstein, Molly Dexter, Camila Glocowski, Lucy Brancazio, Taryn Wenberg, Annie Wertheimer, Sarah Laferrera, and Emma Lubrano will power the Heron eight.

"Over the past two weeks, this boat has been finding more speed," Head Coach Sandra Chu said. :We had a solid race at the Head of the Genesee and I think that's setting us up well for the weekend. We made some internal line up tweaks which have improved the boat's rhythm. We're proud to be representing William Smith and are 100% focused on earning a bid for 2019. We've got great competition ahead and behind us in the draw and we're excited to bring our best to the battle."

Alumnae, family and friends are invited to gather at the HWS tent in Reunion Village on Soldiers Field Road (Boston side), west of the Weeks Footbridge from noon to 4 p.m. Register online here or purchase your wristband upon arrival. Please contact Kira Cosentino at kcosentino@hws.edu or (315) 781-3771 with any questions about the event.

In addition to the current Herons competeing on Sunday, the Heron Alumnae entry is scheduled to race on Saturday at 1:15 p.m. The Herons will row in bow ball #20. The boat contains All-Americans Suzie Tuvell '16 and Rebecca Gutwin Coons '06. Six of the nine members of the boat were part of NCAA travel squads.
