#8 Herons seek league title in Saratoga

4/29/2026 4:00:00 PM

The eighth-ranked William Smith rowing team will be back in action on Friday, May 1, when it heads to Saratoga Springs, New York, for the Liberty League Championships. Racing is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on the 2,000-meter Fish Creek Course.

The Herons will have four boats competing in races on Friday morning. William Smith's varsity eight will be on the water first at 9 a.m. With eight crews the varsity eight is split into two four-team heats. The top three finishers will progress to the Grand Final and the fourth place boat will race in the petit final. The Herons will take on No. 14 Skidmore, St. John Fisher and Rochester Institute of Technology. Thirteenth-ranked Ithaca, Union, No. 12 Rochester and St. Lawrence will race in the second heat. The petit final is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. and the grand final will get underway at 11:30 a.m.

The Herons' second varsity eight will be on the water at 9:15 a.m. in a finals-only race. The Herons will take on the Saints, the Thoroughbreds, the Bombers, the Tigers, the Garnet Chargers and the Yellowjackets. The third varsity eight race is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. William Smith will go head-to-head with Ithaca.

The varsity four race is set to go off at 10:45 a.m. The Herons, Rochester, Ithaca and RIT have all entered V4s.

The winners of the varsity eight race will be crowned Liberty League Champions. To receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, they must also have a 2V8 compete at the regatta. Seven of the eight teams will race for the AQ.

William Smith is seeking its first league title since 2016, when the program secured its sixth consecutive and ninth overall crown. In 2025, William Smith's V8 placed second. The 2V8 won a gold medal and the 3V8 was fourth. The Herons' top three boats have not lost to a league foe this spring.
