GOLD RIVER, Calif. — The Hobart College rowing team began competition today in the 2019 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships on Lake Natoma. The Statesmen entered boats in the first, second, and third varsity eights.
Hobart's No. 23 varsity eight had the first race of the day. The Statesmen raced No. 3 California, No. 6 Princeton, No. 11 Dartmouth, No. 14 Stanford, and No. 19 Florida Institute of Technology. The Golden Bears and the Tigers secured spots in the semifinals finishing first and second respectively. California won the heat, posting a time of 5:37.319. Princeton finished four seconds later. The Big Green crossed the line third. The Statesmen took sixth, finishing 3.775 seconds after the Tigers. Hobart recorded a time of 5:57.469.
In the afternoon's repechage, Hobart's varsity eight took on No. 10 Cornell, No. 17 Wisconsin, and No. 20 Colgate. The winning crew would progress to tomorrow's A/B semifinal while the remaining three boats would go to the C/D semifinal. The Big Red finished three seconds before the Badgers, posting a time of 5:50.697. Hobart finished fourth with a time of 6:01.847.

Hobart's No. 19 second varsity eight took on the No. 3 Golden Bears, the No. 6 Bulldogs, No. 11 Navy, No. 14 Pennsylvania and the No. 25 Panthers. The Golden Bears and the Bulldogs secured a spot in the semifinals finishing first and second respectively. California secured an early lead, and crossed the line at 5:41.064. Yale finished 11 seconds behind the Golden Bears. The Midshipmen posted a third place finish, crossing the line eight seconds behind the Bulldogs. The Statesmen came in fourth, eight seconds behind Navy. Hobart posted a time of 6:08.335.
Hobart's 2V8 took on No. 12 Cornell and No. 18 Oregon in the afternoon repechage. The winning crew would progress to tomorrow's A/B semifinal while the remaining boats would go to the C/D semifinal. The Big Red crossed the finish three seconds before the Beavers, recording a time of 6:03.093. The Statesmen finished third, posting a time of 6:18.246.

Aidan Spencer will power the Hobart 2V8 tomorrow when they race in Semifinal C at 1:10 p.m. (10:10 PT). The Statesmen will race No. 15 Columbia, the Quakers, No. 25 Florida Institute of Technology, No. 17 Drexel, and Santa Clara, who is receiving votes in the latest US Rowing Poll.
Hobart's No. 17 third varsity eight faced No. 1 Washington, who are the defending champions, the No. 8 Big Green, No. 9 Northeastern, and the No. 17 Cardinal. Washington and Northeastern secured a spot in the semifinals. Washington finished first, posting a time of 5:47.318. Northeastern finished second, three seconds behind the Huskies. Hobart and Stanford remained close, but the Statesmen increased their speed and finished five seconds before the Cardinal, taking fourth place. The Statesmen posted a time of 6:12.376.
The afternoon repechage saw the 3V8 draw No. 10 Navy, No. 12 Wisconsin, No. 14 George Washington, and No. 16 Oregon. The top two crews would progress to tomorrows A/B semifinal, with the rest moving on to the 3rd Level Final on Sunday. The Midshipmen crossed the line first, three seconds in front of the Badgers. Hobart finished fourth, edging the Colonials by 0.187 seconds.

Nate Jacon will power Hobart's 3V8 in the third level final on Sunday at 12:22 p.m. (9:22 a.m. PT). Hobart will face Cornell, the Beavers, No. 20 Drexel, No. 21 UCSD, George Washington, and Stanford.
