Lyu leads Statesmen at ITAs

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Harry Lyu led the Hobart College tennis team at this weekend's 2021 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men's Northeast Regional Championships. He advanced to the third round of the singles draw and the second round of the doubles draw in the regional tournament held at the HWS Tennis Center and Bristol Field House.
 
Lyu was one of six Hobart tennis players to compete in the main singles draw. Thomas Shung, Winter Fagerberg, Lyu and Jacob Linares all won their first round matches. Shung rallied to defeat Joseph He in a tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-0, 10-2. Fagerberg cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over TCNJ's Derek Jordan. Lyu bested Vassar's Arun Guruswamy, 6-4, 6-1 in the opening round. Jacob Linares, who was making his collegiate debut, topped Rensselaer's Suhas Krishnan 7-6, 4-7, 10-7. Kaan Ayman and Nick Grosso also competed in this weekend's regional tournament. They were defeated by identical 6-2, 6-2 scores. In the second round, Lyu notched Hobart's lone victory, cruising past St. Lawrence's Nathan Turtledove, 6-2, 6-1. Fagerberg battled Skidmore's Zach Portnoy but was edged, 6-3, 4-6, 10-4. On Saturday, Lyu was edged by Emilo Van Cotthem in three sets. Lyu won the first set 6-3, but Van Cotthem rallied to take the final two sets, 6-2, 6-1.
 
While there was not an official consolation draw, players were given the opportunity to play additional matches against other players in the tournament field. Hyat Oyer played a pair of matches. He beat Union's Ian Schunk 8-3 and New Jersey City's Jordi Julia 8-1.
 
In the doubles draw, Hobart had three teams. Ayman and Jett Wright rolled to an 8-2 opening round victory over NYU's Joseph He and Lucas Biondi. Lyu and Troy Steiner paired up to knock off TCNJ's Nikola Kilibarda and Jacob Quijano, 8-6. Fagerberg and Shung were edged 8-3 by the Skidmore team of Brendan Jimenez and Zachary Portnoy. In the second round, Lyu and Steiner were bested by Rensselaer's Igor Visneveskij and Suhas Krishnan, 8-0. Ayman and Wright were edged by Skidmore's Connor Biernat and Tristan Thiebaut.
 
Sixty-four of the region's best singles players and 32 of the top doubles teams, representing 18 institutions, participated in the annual championship.
 
The singles and doubles champions in each of the ITA's nine regions will receive an automatic bid to the ITA Cup. In addition, the singles and doubles finalists in seven of the nine regions, including the northeast region, will receive an automatic bid to the Small College National Championship.
