GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team will host Liberty League rival Ithaca College at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9 on McCooey Field. Prior to the start of the match, the Herons will honor retired Head Coach
Sally Scatton.
The game will be broadcast live on WHWS-FM (105.7). It will be webcast on HWS All-Access. Fans can also track the action using Live Stats.
Appropriately, William Smith Athletics will honor Scatton for her exceptional coaching career before taking on her alma mater. A 1997 inductee of the Ithaca Athletic Hall of Fame, she led the William Smith field hockey team for 32 seasons, compiling a 468-171-3 record, capturing the 1992, 1997 and 2000 NCAA Division III National Championships. A three-time National Coach of the Year, Scatton mentored 33 of the 36 women that have earned field hockey All-America recognition at William Smith.
Scatton also served as an associate athletic director and senior woman administrator at the time of her retirement. She was the driving force behind the annual William Smith Athletics Award banquet, a game day manager during the winter and spring seasons and a mentor to junior members of the department's coaching staff.
Embracing Hobart and William Smith's commitment to civic engagement, Scatton was the race director for the Great Heron Road Race, a 5k that supported breast cancer charities, and later led fundraising efforts within HWS Athletics to support local breast cancer charity Embrace Your Sisters. She was also the department's volunteer coordinator and a frequent volunteer herself with Geneva's Community Lunch Program.
In addition to the Ithaca Hall of Fame, Scatton is a member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the William Smith Heron Hall of Honor.
William Smith field hockey carries a 4-6 record into Saturday's match following a 3-0 win at Nazareth on Tuesday.
Elizabeth Jacobia has a team-high 12 points on five goals and two assists. She shares the team scoring lead with
Sofia Pattillo, who also has five goals.
Ithaca brings a 9-2 overall record to Geneva, riding a six-match win streak. Morgan Mullen paces the offense with 17 points on seven goals and three assists.
