When Title IX became law in 1972, William Smith Athletics was comprised of five teams and three coaches, but through the efforts of trailblazing women like Mary Hosking, Pat Genovese (who coached three of those five teams in 1972),
Aliceann Wilber and Sally Scatton, the department grew into the widely respected powerhouse it is today, supporting 15 teams and hundreds of student-athletes.
Â
William Smith Athletics has always been at the forefront of the fight for equality, advocating for Heron student-athletes to stand on even ground with their Statesmen counterparts. The coaching staff and administration have mentored Herons to be leaders in their adult lives, be that through sports, their chosen professions and their communities.
Â
Last month, during the Heron Hall of Honor Celebration, Scatton delivered remarks celebrating Title IX and encouraging everyone to continue to push equity in athletics and education.
