#21 Herons finish second at Liberty League Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—The 21st-ranked William Smith College squash team finished second at the 2022 Liberty League Squash Championship hosted by Vassar College this weekend. The Herons posted a 2-1 overall record, completing all three matches on Saturday.
 
William Smith (11-4) logged 9-0 wins over the Brewers and Bard before dropping the defacto title match to St. Lawrence 6-3. The Saints (11-5) also logged 9-0 victories over Bard and Vassar to claim the conference championship.
 
The Herons opened the tournament against the Brewers (6-5). William Smith won seven matches 3-0. Laila Selim knocked off Claire Cross, 11-5, 11-6, 11-7, in the No. 1 spot. It was Selim's ninth win of the season and first in the No. 1 spot. Jada-Smith Padmore cruised past Emma Adams, 11-6, 11-6, 11-7, in the No. 2 spot. It was her first match in the No. 2 spot in the lineup this season. In the No. 3 spot, Shante Frank picked bested Anna Lee, 11-7, 11-9, 11-2. Diya Moolani, Erin Griffis, Molly Wachter and Maia Dreishpoon logged wins in the No. 5-8 spots of the lineup. Jo Pacheco had the closest contest. She beat Nicole Pihlstrom, 11-2, 9-11, 11-2, 11-9, in the No. 4 spot.
 
William Smith posted six 3-0 wins against the Raptor (0-5). Selim only lost four points as she defeated Pam Jaramillo, 11-1, 11-3, 11-0, in the No. 1 spot of the lineup. It was Selim's 10th win of the season. Frank defeated Thenuri De Silva, 11-2, 11-1, 11-2, at No. 3 to collect her 11th win of the season. Dreishpoon dropped two points as she bested Cameron Orr, 11-1, 11-1, 11-0, in the No. 6 spot of the lineup. Pacheco cruised past Opheilla Wang, 11-2, 11-3, 11-0, to earn her team-leading 12th win of the season. Bard had six players so William Smith earned the final three points by default.
 
The Herons closed out the round robin against St. Lawrence. All three matches in the bottom third of the lineup were 3-0 victories split between William Smith and St. Lawrence. Diya Moolani defeated Starnisha Ramsey, 11-7-,11-7, 11-7, in the No. 7 spot. The Saints earned the points at No. 8 and No. 9. Marce Marquez Martinez collected her ninth win of the season, besting Sanna Koivumaki 7-11, 11-3, 11-9, 15-13, in the No. 2 spot of the lineup. Lark Ervasti defeated Makyla Kelley, 9-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-7, for her 10th win of the season. Smith-Padmore and Pacheco had tight matches at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively, but were edged 3-2.
 
William Smith will be back in action Feb. 25-27, when it heads to Boston for the College Squash Association Team National Championships.
