The Hobart and William Smith Colleges tennis teams are set for a busy weekend inside Bristol Field House. The Colleges will host five matches on Saturday and Sunday, March 4-5. On Saturday, the Statesmen will take on Division II Le Moyne College at 9 a.m. and Allegheny College at 3 p.m. Sandwiched between those two matches, William Smith will take on the Gators at noon. The next day, Hobart is scheduled to take on Division II Saint Michael's at 11 a.m. and William Smith will host Oneonta at 3 p.m.
The Statesmen opened their season, splitting matches against Division I programs Colgate and Niagara. Hobart was swept by the Raiders 7-0 and defeated the Purple Ealges 4-3. The Statesmen's No. 2 and No. 3 doubles team won, securing the doubles point and
Winter Fagerberg,
Sean Pesin, and
Troy Steiner all won their singles matches.
The Herons (0-1) also opened their spring schedule against Niagara Sunday afternoon. The No. 1 doubles pair of
Maggie Bonomo and
Audrey Camacho secured a 6-2 victory for William Smith. Camacho also secured a 7-5, 6-2 win in her singles match against Niagara's Megan Gambl in the No. 2 spot.
The Statesmen and Dolphins have never met on the tennis courts. Saturday will be Hobart's third all-time meeting against Gators. Allegheny has won both of the previous matches. Sunday's contest against Saint Michael's will be the fifth meeting between the two schools and first since 2014. Hobart leads the series against the Purple Knights 4-0. The Herons and Gators will meet for the first time on Saturday. William Smith is 12-0 all-time against Oneonta.
The Statesmen are 29-24 in singles play this season, led by
Nick Grosso (4-1) and
Thomas Shung (5-3) and 18-11 in doubles play, with the pair of
Harry Lyu and
Troy Steiner (5-1) leading the way. The Herons are 15-18 in singles play, led by
Maggie Bonomo (5-3) and
Isabelle Goings-Perrot (4-2) and 6-6 in doubles play.
Le Moyne is 7-1 this season and winners of six straight. Alleghney's men's team is 2-2 this season while the women are 3-3. The Purple Knights are 2-4 on the season and Red Dragons of Oneonta are 7-3 after dropping three straight matches to St. Lawrence, Rensselaer, and TCNJ.
