Herons, Bombers set for top-10 clash

The nationally-ranked William Smith College lacrosse team will play the second game of a three-game road trip when it makes the 49-mile trek southwest to Higgins Stadium to take on nationally-ranked Ithaca College in a key Liberty League contest. Opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.  
 
Tomorrow's game features two of the top teams in the Liberty League. The Herons, who are ranked eighth in the IL Women/IWLCA poll and fourth in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Poll, bring a 10-1 overall record and are the only unbeaten team in the Liberty League with a 5-0 mark in the conference play. William Smith is currently up a game in the loss column on the Bombers, who are ninth in the coaches poll and 11th in the media poll. Ithaca is 10-1 overall and is 6-1 in Liberty League play.
 
The Herons have won six consecutive games following a 19-7 victory over Rochester on Saturday. William Smith enters the week averaging 15.73 goals per game and allowing a mere 6.91 The Herons are ranked in the top 25 in the nation in winning percentage (14th, .909), scoring defense (20th, 6.91), assists per game (21st, 7.82), scoring margin (21st, +8.82) and turnovers per game (23rd, 14.27).
 
The Herons are led offensively by Allie McGinty's 54 points on 19 goals and 35 assists. She leads the Liberty League and is 13th in the nation in assists per game (3.18) and is 14th in total assists. Maddie Montgomery has a team-high 39 to go along with seven assists for 46 points. Anna Murphy has 42 points on 32 goals and 10 assists. Defensively, Payton McMahon has a team-high 19 caused turnovers with Kate Risley right behind her with 17 caused turnovers and a team-best 27 ground balls.
 
Maura Smeader has played the majority of the minutes in goal. She is 10-1 with a 6.76 goals against average and a .488 save percentage. She leads the Liberty League and is 11th in the nation in GAA.
 
Ithaca has won five straight games and is coming off a 19-2 victory over Vassar. The Bombers enter the game averaging 17.55 goals per game, 12th in the nation, while allowing 7.91 goals per game. Ithaca has one of the best draw control units, entering the week ranked fourth in the country averaging 19 draw wins a game.
 
Maizy Veitch leads the team and the Liberty League with 43 goals and 59 points. Her 16 assists are also a team-high. Alex Ritchie and Megan Motkowski add to a potent offense with 31 and 30 goals, respectively. Caroline Wise leads the team and the nation with 125 draw controls. She is averaging 11.36 draw controls a game, second in the nation. Rachel Rosenberg has a team-high 23 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers. Lexi Held has played the majority of minutes in goal. She is 10-0 with a 7.59 GAA and a .496 save percentage. She is 23rd in the nation in GAA.
 
This will be the 57th game between William Smith and Ithaca. The Herons hold a 33-23 advantage against the Bombers, including a 6-4 edge in the last 10 meetings. The series is deadlocked at 11-11 when the teams play in Ithaca.
