Hobart heads to IRAs

6/2/2022 2:29:00 PM

The Hobart College rowing team will be back in action when it heads to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship in West Windsor, New Jersey. The Statesmen will send a varsity four to this year's national championship event.

Racing will begin June 3 with a time trial at 11:20 a.m. The field will consist of 27 teams. The 18 fastest boats will be seeded in the A/B/C semifinals and will be alive for the national championship. The final nine boats will be in the DE semifinals.

The semifinals are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Friday. The top two finishers in each A/B/C semifinal will proceed to the grand final on Saturday, while the third and fourth place finishers progress to the petite final and fifth and sixth to the third level final. In the D/E semifinals, the top three boats will advance to the fourth level final and the remainder will compete in the fifth level final.

On Saturday, the championship final heats are scheduled to begin at 10:20 a.m.

Hobart's varsity four will be powered by Jackson Abreu, Zachary Berzon, Cameron Kumagai, Mo Marchart and Alex Sickmuller. Berzon, Kumagai, Marchart and Sickmuller were all a part of Hobart's varsity eight that won a gold medal at the Liberty League Championship and competed at the IRA Championship last year in the Statesmen's top boat. Abreu steered Hobart's second varsity eight to a gold medal at this year's conference championship regatta.

Hobart will enter a varsity four at the IRAs for the first time since 2011. The Statesmen have finished on the podium three times in a fours race. In 2003 the freshman four won a gold medal. Hobart also reached the podium in 2005 and 2007.

Fans who cannot make the trip, can follow the action with Live Results and a live stream courtesy of the IRA Rowing YouTube channel.
