William Smith shows strong at Mary Hosking Invitational

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.- The William Smith College tennis opened its season by hosting the Mary Hosking Invitational at HWS Tennis Center. Schools that participated in this invitational were SUNY Geneseo, Ithaca College, Nazareth College, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), University of Rochester, St. Lawrence University and Union College.

The Herons had a strong first showing against tough competition as they prepared for their next match against Daemen College on Sept. 11 followed by the ITA Northeast Regional Championships on September 23rd in Clinton, NY.

Flight A Singles:
•    First-year Haley Levine had a strong showing in her first collegiate matches as she defeated Jackie Drozd from RIT by a score of 8-6 followed by another win against Taylor Crain from Ithaca by a score of 8-4. Levine then fell to eventual Flight A Singles winner Josephine Libby from University of Rochester by a score of 8-1.
Flight B Singles:
•    Sophomore Isabelle Goings-Perrot started the invitational off strong with a 8-0 defeat of Claire Pullen from Nazareth College. Goings-Perrot then fell to eventual Flight B Singles winner Molly Jesperson from St. Lawrence University by a score of 8-4. 
Flight C Singles:
•    Sophomore Julia Pida started out hot with an 8-0 defeat over Anika Galkicwicz from RIT. Pida was then bested by Maya Stepic of St. Lawrence by a score of 8-3.
Flight A Doubles:
•    The pairing of Goings-Perrot and Pida earned a first-round victory over Bulkeley and Zak from Nazareth College before falling in the second round to eventual Flight A Doubles winner Karadimou and Nicol from Union College by a score of 8-4.
Flight B Doubles:
•    The Herons pairing of Buck and Fine earned a first-round win over Hecht and Wagner from Nazareth College by a score of 8-2. The Herons fell in a dramatic match against Ithaca College and eventual Flight B Doubles winners Andrews and Shenk by a score of 8-7 (7-5).

COACHES CORNER:
"I'm proud of the team's effort this weekend," Head Coach Tim Riskie said. "First-year Haley Levine making A Flight semifinal was our highlight.  We had some strong performances from Goings-Perot and Pida, and new doubles team, Buck/Fine losing close matches to eventual champions.  We look forward to continuing to develop as a team on and off the court."
 
UP NEXT:
William Smith will host Daemen College at the HWS Tennis Center on Sunday, Sept, 11  with the start time scheduled to be at 11a.m.
