#13 Herons win 8th straight, best Colby 7-2

GENEVA, N.Y.—The 13th-ranked  William Smith College Squash team defeated 20th-ranked Colby College 7-2 at the Smith Squash Center this evening. With their eighth straight victory, the Herons are now 13-2 overall this season.

  • William Smith had four sweeps in the match. The Herons added two 3-1 victories and had a 3-2 win.

MATCH MOMENTS
  • Senior Marce Marquez Martinez, who was playing in her final match at the Smith Squash Center, cruised to an 11-3, 11-1, 11-8 win over Celine Odegard at No. 3. The win improved Marquez Martinez to 12-3 on the season. She is 11-2 in the No. 3 spot.
  • Sophomore Anna O'Connor extended her winning streak to 12 matches with a win in the No. 4 spot. She beat Clara Lehv, 11-6, 11-9, 11-6, to improve to 14-1 on the season.
  • Sophomore Shante Frank knocked off Amanda Miller, 15-13, 11-3, 11-9, at No. 5. Frank is 9-6 overall this year.
  • Junior Lark Ervasti swept Mehak Dey-Kohli, 11-3, 11-6, 11-5, at No. 7. It was Ervasti's eighth win of the season.
  • In the No. 2 spot, junior Laila Selim rallied to beat Norma Aileen Dominguez Jimenez, 8-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-3. Selim is 11-4 this season, playing all 15 matches at No. 2.
  • After dropping the first game, junior Jada Smith-Padmore defeated India Spencer, 8-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-5. Smith-Padmore has 12 wins on the season.
  • Sophomore Rafaela Albuja Sanchez collected her 11th straight win at No. 1. She beat Andrea Lee Jia Qi, 11-7, 8-11, 11-4, 6-11, 14-12, to improve to 13-2.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action next weekend, Feb. 4-5, when it heads to Canton, N.Y., for the 2023 Liberty League Women's Squash Tournament. The Herons will take on Vassar and Bard Saturday and Denison and St. Lawrence Sunday.
