The William Smith College field hockey team will be back in action Saturday with a Liberty League showdown against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Action between the Herons and the Engineers is set for 2 p.m. on McCooey Field.
William Smith will be celebrating "Kids Day" on Saturday. The Herons look to grow the game of field hockey in the Geneva community and will welcome kids' kindergarten through eighth grade to participate in the walk out to midfield for lineups and the national anthem. ABOUT THE HERONS:
- William Smith (6-5) is coming off a 3-0 win over Houghton University on Thursday. Senior Libby Maxwell, and graduate students Mackenzie Wodka and Mary Kate Breward scored the Herons' goals.
- The Herons are 1-1 in the Liberty League with a win over Rochester and a loss to Vassar.
- Junior Rebecca Mantione (4G, 3A) leads William Smith with 11 points, followed by Maxwell with 10 (4G, 2A). Senior Sofia Pattillo has chipped in eight points (3G, 2A).
- Seniors Kristen McCormick and Brittany Foster split time in goal for the Herons on Thursday, combining for one save in the win. McCormick has a slight edge in minutes played, securing a 1.72 GAA, a .657 save percentage, and a 5-3 record. Foster has recorded a 1.56 GAA, a .650 save percentage, and a 1-2 record.
ABOUT THE ENGINEERS:
- RPI (3-8) is coming off a 2-1 loss to New Paltz on Tuesday. The Engineers are 0-2 in conference play after falling to Rochester and Vassar.
- Lauren McCarthy (5G, 2A) leads RPI with 12 points.
- Tess Garchinsky has played a majority of the minutes in goal for the Engineers and has recorded a 2.27 GAA, a .761 save percentage and a 3-7 record.
ABOUT THE SERIES:
- Saturday's matchup will be the 34th meeting between the Herons and the Engineers.
- William Smith leads the series 27-6, including a 16-2 edge in Geneva.
- Last season the Herons defeated the Engineers 2-1 in overtime at RPI. Mantione scored the game-winning-goal just 2:29 into OT.
