Herons to compete for Kurtz Cup

The 13th-ranked William Smith College squash team will be back in action Friday, Feb. 17, when it heads to Philadelphia for the 2023 College Squash Association Team Championships. The Herons will be competing for the Kurtz Cup.
 
This weekend's championship will be hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. William Smith begins its trophy quest at 12:30 p.m. against 11th-ranked Tufts. The Herons' second match of the tournament will be against either No. 10 Dartmouth or No. 15 Amherst on Saturday. If William Smith wins its opener, the match will be at 2:30 p.m. if they lose, the match will be at 11:30 a.m. The other half of the draw includes the hosts, who are ranked ninth, No. 12 Stanford, No. 14 Williams and No. 16 Bowdoin.
 
Junior Rafaela Albuja Sanchez plays at the top of the ladder for the Herons and sports a 16-2 overall record. She has won 14 straight matches. Sophomore Anna O'Connor has won 16 straight matches and is a team-best 18-1 on the season. In total, the Herons have seven players that have won 10 or more matches.
 
William Smith has won seven trophies at the CSA championships. The Herons won the Walker Cup in 2005-06, 2006-2007 and 2021-22. William Smith has won the Epps Cup three times, 2008-09, 2012-13 and 2017-18. The Herons last competed in the Kurtz Cup in 2004-05. William Smith went 1-2 with its win coming against Tufts.
