Hobart advances to Summers Cup semifinals

HARTFORD, Conn.—The 22nd-ranked Hobart College squash team defeated 19th-ranked Bates College 6-3 in the opening match of the Summers Cup, the C Division of the College Squash Association Team Championships at Trinity College. With the victory, the Statesmen are now 11-9 overall this season.
 
KEY FACTS
  • Hobart had two 3-0 sweeps, a 3-1 victory and won three matches in five games.
  • Bates (10-7) had a 3-0 sweep and two 3-1 victories.
  • Today's match was Hobart's first win over Bates since 2005.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • In the No. 1 spot, Junior Omar Kiwan defeated Alec Spiro, 11-9, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9. It was Kiwan's team-leading 14th win of the season. He improved to 5-2 in the No. 1 spot.
  • Junior Sebi De La Vega cruised past Jonathan Walker, 11-3, 11-1, 11-3, at No. 2. With the victory, De La Vega picked up his seventh win of the season.
  • Junior Hussein Labib swept Harris Ramlee, 11-6, 12-10, 11-7. Labib is 10-9 overall on the season, including a 10-8 record at No. 3.
  • First-year Javier De La Vega rallied to beat Labeeb Ali, 11-13, 8-11, 13-11, 11-9, 11-6, at No. 6. It was De La Vega's ninth win of the year.
  • Senior James Mazzarelli clinched the overall victory for Hobart in the No. 8 spot. He defeated Sultan Hashmi, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8, 4-11, 11-6, in a five-game thriller. Mazzarelli is now 11-6 on the season.
  • Sophomore Joseph Raskin Lantos closed out the match, defeating Ashton Monteiro at No. 4. Raskin Lantos came from behind to win 9-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-9. Raskin Lanto is 11-5 on the season.
 
UP NEXT
Hobart will be back in action tomorrow, Feb. 25, when it competes in the semifinals. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.  The Statesmen will take on either Colby or Amherst.
