#13 William Smith wins twice to open conference championship

CANTON, N.Y.—The 13th-ranked William Smith College squash team opened the 2023 Liberty League Women's Squash Championship with a pair 9-0 victories at St. Lawrence University today. The Herons defeated Vassar and Bard to improve to 15-2 overall on the season.

AGAINST THE BREWERS
  • At No. 1, Junior Rafaela Albuja Sanchez defeated Sehar Dey-Kohli, 11-6, 11-4, 11-2. Albuja Sanchez is 14-2 on the year, playing all 16 matches.
  • Marquez Martinez knocked off Adriana Ordaya, 11-3, 11-5, 11-3, at No. 2. It was her sixth consecutive win.
  • O'Connor topped Mariya Novosad, 11-3, 11-2, 11-2, in the third spot.
  • Junior Jada Smith-Padmore cruised past Sophia Choudhri, 11-2, 11-3, 11-2. It was Smith-Padmore's 13th victory of the year.
  • Finnerty won 11-2, 11-2, 11-3 at No. 5.
  • Vassar only had five players so William Smith won the other five spots by default.
 
AGAINST THE RAPTORS
  • Against Bard, junior Laila Selim played at No. 1. She topped Pam Jaramillo, 11-2, 11-7, 11-4. It was Selim's 12th win of the year.
  • Marquez Martinez extended her winning streak to seven matches with a victory at No. 2. She beat Jacinta Creel, 11-2, 11-4, 11-3. Marquez Martinez is 14-3 overall this year.
  • O'Connor won 11-5, 11-4, 11-3 in the No. 3 spot. She leads the team with 16 wins.
  • At No. 4, Shante Frank cruised past Grace Sanger-Johnson, 11-3, 11-1, 11-3. Frank is 10-6 on the season.
  • Finnerty improved to 7-6 overall, beating Prootha Patel, 11-1, 11-3, 11-2 at No. 5.
  • Like Vassar, Bard only had five players, so the Herons won four matches by default.  
 
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action tomorrow when it concludes the Liberty League Championships. The Herons will take on Denison at 9 a.m. and St. Lawrence at 11:30 a.m.
