#13 William Smith wins 4th league title

CANTON, N.Y.—The 13th-ranked William Smith College squash team won its fourth Liberty League Championship at the Robbie Squash Center this afternoon. The Herons defeated No. 23 Denison and St. Lawrence 9-0 today to improve to 4-0 on the weekend.
 
Senior Marce Marquez Martinez was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Performer, posting a 4-0 record. She was 2-0 in the No. 2 spot and 2-0 in the No. 3 spot. She did not lose a game this weekend.
 
KEY STATS
  • William Smith is 17-2 this season. The 17 wins by the Herons are the most since the 2015-16 season.
  • Against Denison, William Smith had seven 3-0 sweeps and a 3-1 victory.

  • At No. 1, junior Rafaela Albuja Sanchez knocked off Maria Clara Ramirez Velasquez, 11-4, 7-11, 12-10, 11-5. It was Albuja Sanchez's 13th consecutive win.
  • Junior Laila Selim swept Antoinette Ramsey, 11-4, 11-6,12-10, at No. 2. It was Selim's 13th win of the season.
  • Marquez Martinez defeated Lane Harding, 11-6, 11-6, 11-7, at No. 3.
  • Sophomore Anna O'Connor continued her winning streak, cruising past Lindsey Cruikshank, 11-1, 11-3, 11-6, at No. 4.
  • In the fifth spot, junior Shante Frank bested Charlotte Sigg, 11-2, 11-6, 11-5.
  • Junior Jada Smith-Padmore topped Kate Manderlink, 11-3, 11-4, 11-5, at No. 6.
  • Junior Lark Ervasti only lost seven points as she beat Hannah Best, 11-4, 11-1, 11-2, in the seventh spot.
  • First-year Jessica Finnerty slipped past Natalie Stanchina, 11-4, 11-4, 11-3, at No. 8.
 
AGAINST THE SAINTS
  • Both St. Lawrence and William Smith were 3-0 entering the final women's match of the tournament.
  • Selim notched her second sweep of the day, besting Madeleine Martin, 11-4, 11-9, 11-7 at No. 2. Selim is 14-4 on the season, including a 13-4 mark in the No. 2 spot.
  • At No. 3, Marquez Martinez defeated Petra DeRose, 11-8, 11-0, 11-3. The win improved Marquez Martinez to 16-3 on the year with a 13-2 record in the No. 3 spot.
  • Frank knocked off Laura Franz, 11-5, 11-4, 11-5, in the fifth spot. It was Frank's 12th win of the season.
  • At No. 6, Smith-Padmore logged her 15th win of the year, dispatching Ksenia Merkulova, 11-6, 11-5, 11-5.
  • Ervasti swept Xitlali Zuniga, 11-7, 11-1, 11-8, at No. 7. It was Ervasti's 10th win of the season.
  • O'Connor bested Ulrikke Bore Ribesen, 11-6, 8-11, 11-3, 11-8, at No. 4. O'Connor has won 16 straight matches and is 18-1 overall this season.
  • Finnerty topped Tita Hicks, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6, 12-10, at No. 8. Finnerty is 9-6 this year.
  • At the top of the lineup, Albuja Sanchez defeated Abhisheka David in a five-game thriller. She rallied for an 11-8, 9-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-4 victory. Albuja Sanchez is 16-2 this season, playing all 18 matches at No. 1.

William Smith will be back in action Feb. 17-19, when it heads to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for the College Squash Association Team Championships hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
