After wrapping up its season in Hartford, Connecticut, the Hobart College squash team was awarded the College Squash Association's (CSA) Barnaby Award for the most improved men's team. The award was voted on by the CSA's men's coaches and recognized the Statesmen for showing the most improvement in the national rankings from the previous year. Hobart moved from No. 26 in the nation in 2021-22 to No. 20 at the end of the 2022-23 season.
"I'm verry proud of the jump in ranking and esteem that both teams have made on the college squash and global squash stage," Head Coach
Pat Cosquer said. "It's nice to be recognized for the changes in culture, work ethic and mindset we've made here with respect to squash at HWS. I look forward to both teams finding even more consistency and discipline to reach the next level of positive results."Â

This year, the Statesmen stepped up their game against stronger competition, recording eight wins against top 30 teams, and six against top 25 teams. In 2021-22 Hobart only defeated four top 30 teams and did not beat any top 25 opponents. Despite posting the same number of wins, the Statesmen earned their 2023 wins against a much higher quality of schedule, a major factor in being honored as the most improved team.

After a slow start, Hobart caught fire at the end of the regular season, going 4-1 against five top 25 opponents. This run included a 9-0 sweep over No. 24 Hamilton, and three 6-3 victories against No. 25 Navy, No. 20 St. Lawrence, and No. 21 Colby.
Â
That momentum carried over into the Liberty League Championship, the Statesmen went 2-1 on the weekend, earning third place finish. Their wins included a 9-0 sweep over Bard College and an 8-1 win over Denison University. Hobart concluded the season with an 11-11 overall record.
At the CSA Team Championships, Hobart beat No. 19 Bates 6-3. It was the highest-ranked team Hobart beat this season.Â

Hobart also won the Barnaby Award in 1993-94.
