Herons hold in polls ahead of match up with #20 Ithaca

The William Smith College lacrosse team remained ranked in the top three in both national polls today ahead of a key midweek showdown with Ithaca College. The Herons are third in the IL Women/IWLCA poll and second in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll.
 
In addition, senior Payton McMahon and junior Kate Risley earned a spot on the Liberty League's weekly honor roll for their efforts in wins over Rochester Institute of Technology and the University of Rochester.
 
With two wins last week, William Smith improved to 11-0 on the season with a 5-0 mark in Liberty League play. The Herons beat the Tigers 19-9 in the Poole Family Sports Dome and followed that up with a 16-6 victory over the Yellowjackets.
 
McMahon led the Herons with eight goals on the week, including a career-high five against Rochester on Saturday. McMahon also had five ground balls, three caused turnovers and five draw controls. Risley had three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
 
Wednesday's match up with Ithaca will be the Herons' seventh game against a nationally-ranked opponent this season. The Bombers are 20th in this week's 'IWLCA poll. Ithaca is 8-4 overall with a 5-2 mark in conference play. Ithaca is looking to bounce back from a 13-12 loss to Vassar on Saturday. 
 
The Macarollin food truck will be at Wednesday's game. The first 200 fans with a valid HWS One Card will receive a meal courtesy of the Heron Society in celebration of DIII Week. The truck will be serving plain, buffalo chicken or Pulled pork.
 
Fans who cannot make the trip to Geneva can follow all the action with HWS All-Access and Live Stats. The game will also be broadcast on WHWS-FM (105.7 in Geneva).
 
PLAYERS TO WATCH
  • WILLIAM SMITH: Senior Maddie Montgomery leads the Liberty League with 39 goals and 49 points. She also has a team-high 40 draw controls.
  • WILLIAM SMITH: Junior Allie McGinty has a team-high 18 assists.
  • WILLIAM SMITH: Risley leads William Smith defensively with 24 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers.
  • WILLIAM SMITH: Sophomore Maura Smeader has started every game in goal. She is 11-0 with a 7.02 GAA and a .520 save percentage.
  • ITHACA: Maizy Veitch leads the team with 44 points on 32 goals and 12 assists.
  • ITHACA: Veitch shares the team lead in goals with Chloe Nodryke and Sydney Phillips.
  • ITHACA: Caroline Wise leads the Liberty League with 129 draw controls.
  • ITHACA: Lexi Held has played a majority of the minutes in goal. She is 8-4 with a 10.59 GAA and a .470 save percentage.
