Statesmen host Bombers, Tigers as league race heats up

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team will host a pair of key Liberty League games this weekend, welcoming Ithaca College and Rochester Institute of Technology to Bristol Gymnasium. The Statesmen and Bombers will tip off at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, followed by a 4 p.m. showdown with the Tigers on Saturday, Jan. 27.
 
Hobart enters the weekend with a 13-4 overall record. The Statesmen are tied for second in the league standings with a 6-4 mark, two games behind first place St. Lawrence. Ithaca (10-6) and RIT (9-7) are tied for fourth, a half game behind Hobart. The top six teams in the final standings earn a spot in the Liberty League Tournament.
 
Both games will be webcast live on HWS All-Access with Live Stats available on HWSAthletics.com. WHWS-FM (105.7) will provide wraparound coverage of the games on Friday and Saturday, broadcasting Hobart basketball as well as the Hobart and William Smith hockey games.
 
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE STATESMEN
  1. Hobart leads the Liberty League in rebounding margin at +4.8. Both Ithaca (-3.8) and RIT (-2.3) have been outrebounded by their opposition.
  2. The Statesmen lead the Liberty League and rank 29th in the nation in free throw percentage, knocking down 75.4% from the stripe.
  3. Individually, juniors Aidan Rodgers and Pat Healy are first and second, respectively, in the league in free throw percentage. Rodgers is converting 86.7% from the line and Healy is close behind at 86.4%.
  4. Five Statesmen are averaging nine or more points per game led by Rodgers' 14.2 ppg.
  5. Two Hobart players are tied for second in the Liberty League in double-doubles. Senior Ryan Lucey and junior Carter Meshanic both have three this season.
 
SCOUTING ITHACA
  • The Bombers are one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the nation. Ithaca is sixth in Division III in 3-point attempts per game (31.9) and eighth in 3-pointers made per game (10.9).
  • Ithaca has four players producing nine or more points per game, paced by junior Logan Wendell's 18.4 ppg.
  • The Bombers are coming off a 74-60 win over Skidmore last Saturday.
  • Ithaca has won five of the past six games against Hobart, including a 102-77 win in Ithaca earlier this month.
 
SCOUTING RIT
  • The Tigers, who are coming off a 76-70 loss at St. Lawrence last Saturday, will travel to RPI on Friday night.
  • RIT is 20th in the nation in assist-to-turnover (1.4) and ranks in the top 40 in fouls per game (32nd, 14.0) and turnovers per game (37th, 11.2).
  • The Tigers have four players logging nine or more points per game with junior Chase Dickens leading the way at 13.4 ppg.
  • Hobart and RIT have split their past four meetings. The Tigers handed the Statesmen their first loss of the season on Jan. 5, eking out a 77-76 win.
