CANTON, N.Y.—The 14th-ranked William Smith squash team won its second straight and fifth overall Liberty League Championship at the Robbie Squash Center this afternoon. The Herons defeated No. 25 St. Lawrence 7-2 in the championship match of the conference championship.
Senior
Laila Selim was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Performer, posting a 2-0 record on the weekend. She won both of her matches in 3-0 sweeps.
William Smith has won three of the last four conference crowns. The 2020-21 title was not contested.
MATCH SUMMARY
- William Smith picked up the victory, winning five of their seven points in 3-0 sweeps. The Herons won the other two in four games.
- Senior Rafaela Albuja Sanchez beat Anannya Morey, 11-7, 11-8, 11-5, in the No. 1 spot. It was Albuja Sanchez's 11th straight victory. She is 12-2 overall this season playing all 14 matches at No. 1.
- Selim won 11-6, 11-2, 11-8 at No. 2. She beat Ulrikke Bore Ribesen for third straight win. She is 10-4 in the No. 2 spot this year.
- Sophomore Nathalie Sim defeated Margaret Fleischner in the No. 3 spot. She lost only three points, picking up an 11-3, 11-3, 11-0 win. Sim is 10-2 this season playing all 12 matches at No. 3.
- In the No. 4 spot junior Anna O'Connor swept Madeleine Martin, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8.
- Senior Lark Ervasti also collected a 3-0 sweep in the No. 7 spot. She cruised past Ksenia Merkulova, 11-5, 11-4, 11-0. She is 8-3 this season.
- Sophomore Jess Finnerty secured the Liberty League title for the Herons with her win in the No. 8 spot. She bdefeated Xitlali Zuniga, 11-0, 7-11, 12-10, 11-2. The win was Finnerty's ninth of the season.
- Senior Jada Smith-Padmore won edged Petra DeRose, 15-13, 11-5, 9-11, 11-9, to close out the match.

William Smith will be back in action next weekend, Feb. 16-18, when it heads to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for the College Squash Association Team Championships.
