#21 Statesmen edge #22 Midshipmen, claim Summers Cup

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The 21st-ranked Hobart squash team defeated 22nd-ranked Navy 5-4 in the championship match of the Summers Cup at the College Squash Association's Team Championships this afternoon. This is the second time Hobart has claimed the Summers Cup.
 
The Summers Cup is presented to the winner of the C Division at the CSA Team Championships. The Statesmen, who entered the weekend as the No. 1 seed in the draw, posted three 5-4 victories, defeating Hamilton, Bowdoin and Navy to capture the title.
 
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
  • Hobart last won the Summers Cup in 1990.
  • In total, Hobart has won five trophies at the CSA team championships. The Statesmen won the Conroy Cup three times (2006-07, 2011-12, 2021-22).
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • The Statesmen finish the year with an 11-9 overall record.
  • Navy drops to 15-15 overall.
 
MATCH SUMMARY
  • Hobart earned four of its five points in the match with 3-1 victories. The Statesmen's fifth point came in a 3-0 sweep.
  • Navy took a 1-0 lead in the match when Matthew Kang notched a sweep in the No. 5 spot.
  • Senior Omar Kiwan quickly tied the match 1-1 when he beat Lucas Spiro, 11-4, 5-11, 11-5, 11-6 at No. 3. With the win, Kiwan improved to 14-5 overall on the season with a 10- record at No. 3.  It was the 40th win of his career.
  • The Midshipmen won the next two matches on the courts, taking a 3-1 lead. They posted a sweep at No. 8 and a 3-1 victory at No. 7.
  • Hobart began its comeback when junior Joseph Raskin Lantos edged Alexander Orr, 11-7, 8-11, 11-3, 11-7, at the No. 4 spot. With the win, Raskin Lantos improved to 8-5 on the season.
  • At No. 1, Hussein Labib rallied for a 7-11, 11-8, 11-6 win against Matthew Wang. It was Labib's third straight win and ninth of the season.
  • First-year Angel Ripolles gave Hobart a 4-3 lead with a sweep in the No. 9 spot. He beat Holden Woodward, 12-10, 11-6, 12-10. It was Medina's fifth win of the year.
  • Navy added another sweep in the No. 6 spot to make it a 4-4.
  • In the No. 2 spot, first-year Dhirren Rajarathinam continued his outstanding rookie campaign clinching the overall victory for Hobart.  He beat Henry Sparkman, 12-10, 11-5, 9-11, 11-7. Rajarathinam has won 14 straight matches and is 18-1 overall this season. He won all 12 matches he played in the No. 2 spot.
